Spots or residue on bottles? Causes and how to fix it
If your bottles are coming out with white spots, a cloudy film, or chalky residue, here's the reassuring part: the machine cleans with water, a washing tablet and steam. There's nothing inside it that can create residue. What you're seeing is mineral deposit from your tap water, and in most cases you can sort it out at home.
The spots are cosmetic. They're the same minerals that are in your drinking water, and they don't affect sterilisation or safety. But nobody wants spotty bottles, so let's get rid of them.
Work through these steps in order. Most cases are solved by the first two.
1. Check the loading
The spray jets need a clear path into each bottle. Bottles angle in from the sides on the bottle attachments, which hold them tilted so water doesn't pool on top. Nipples go in the corners, collars and caps on top. If a bottle is lying flat, wedged against another item, or sitting over a jet at the wrong angle, the jets can't reach inside it and it won't come out clean.
Note: four bottles at a time is the sweet spot. If you're loading more, make sure every bottle still sits properly on its attachment.
2. Descale the machine
Limescale builds up in the machine's water path over time, and once it does, wash performance drops and spots get worse. This is the single most common cause.
The descale protocol:
- Drop one descaling tablet into the water tank and let it dissolve fully
- Run Deep Clean
- Run a plain-water Quick Wash to rinse
About an hour, start to finish.
If you have hard water and one tablet doesn't do it, step up: dissolve two tablets and run Deep Clean, then rinse. For heavy build-up that's been accumulating for months, run Deep Clean twice with two tablets each time, then rinse. The tablets work, but they need to match the severity of the build-up. A machine that's never been descaled won't come right with a single tablet.
How often: monthly as standard. Every two weeks if you have hard water, or as soon as white spots appear on bottles.
Warning: use nuviebaby Descaling Tablets only. Vinegar, citric acid powder and other descaling products aren't designed for this machine and can damage internal components.
Heavy buildup can take more than one round to clear. Judge each wash against the last one: improvement means it's working, so keep going.
Also worth watching, the full maintenance routine:
3. Hand-wash bottles that already have build-up
This is the step almost everyone misses. Descaling cleans the machine. It can't remove limescale that has already dried onto your bottles, and the drying cycle bakes those deposits on a little more with every wash. So if your bottles went cloudy before you descaled, they'll still look cloudy after, even though the machine is now clean.
The reset is simple:
- Hand-wash the affected bottles in warm soapy water
- Run them through the machine again
- Judge the results from there
Clean machine plus clean bottles is the fresh start.
4. Use the right washing tablet
Only use Super Cleanâ„¢ Washing Tablets, placed in the tablet drawer inside the main body of the machine. Other detergents don't rinse cleanly in this machine and can leave a film on bottles.
5. Still seeing spots? It's your water
Water hardness varies household to household, even on the same street. If you've done everything above and light spots still appear, your water is on the harder side. Two things help:
- Descale every two weeks instead of monthly
- Use filtered water in the tank. Reverse osmosis or distilled water removes the minerals entirely, which means nothing to deposit and nothing to descale. Note that carbon jug filters and sediment filters don't remove dissolved minerals, so they won't help here.
A quick test if you're unsure: hand-wash two bottles, load them correctly, and run a cycle with plain water and no washing tablet. If spots still appear, that's your water leaving minerals behind as the bottles dry. The machine is doing its job, and cadence plus filtered water is the fix.
If it's still not right
Don't worry, we'll get to the bottom of it together. If you've worked through everything above and the spots are still winning, reach out to us with:
- Your order number
- A few photos of the bottles
- Your descaling routine so far (how often, how many tablets)
- The water you use in the tank, and the settings you've been running
The more detail you give us, the faster we can pinpoint what's going on. And if it turns out something is genuinely wrong with your machine, it's covered. That's what the warranty is for.
